Spider-Man Back in MCU, New ‘The Batman’ Cast Members, Binoche Honoured With Award, More

The Film Magazine’s round-up of all the major film news from the week of Mon 23rd Sept – Sun 29th Sept 2019.


Disney and Sony have reached an agreement to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a new deal jointly announced Friday (27th Sept), it was revealed that Kevin Feige will produce the 3rd Spidey instalment in exchange for 25% of profits and a retention of total merchandising rights for Disney, while Holland will also be able to appear in Disney-Marvel central universe films.

Jonah Hill and Jeffrey Wright are reportedly in advanced negotiations to join Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ upcoming DC/Warner Bros. project The Batman. If rumours are to be believed, Hill will take on the role of either Riddler or Penguin, while Wright will fill the role of Commissioner Gordon.

Sam Neil, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum will reprise their roles from Jurassic Park (1993) for the upcoming sequel to Jurassic World: Fallen KingdomJurassic World 3which is set to be directed by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow.

Sony are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Kubo and the Two StringsBumblebee and Missing Link director Travis Knight to helm their big screen adaptation of the famous video game ‘Uncharted’, set to star Spider-Man star Tom Holland.

Juliette Binoche, the French star of The English Patient, Chocolat and High Life, is to receive the European Film Awards’ European Achievement in World Cinema honour at their ceremony from Berlin on 7th November 2019.

The European Audiovisual Observatory have revealed that Amazon are the biggest purveyors of European cinema outside of Europe. The study, conducted by Ampere Analysis, indicates that the brand currently offers twice as many European titles as its closest competitor Netflix at 3,281 in total.

The Hollywood Reporter have learned that the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, is developing a Star Wars movie. The man who oversaw the development of the Marvel Cinematic Universe under the Disney banner is being moved across to the Disney-owned Lucasfilm for an unknown project while Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy focuses on the ever-growing franchise’s most forthcoming releases.

Disney head Bob Iger has revealed in his new book “The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company” that Star Wars creator George Lucas “felt betrayed” by The Force Awakens as he had expected Disney to use the story ideas he had sold to them as part of their purchase of Star Wars production company Lucasfilm. Iger recalls that Lucas exclaimed “there’s nothing new” upon hearing of the distributor’s new plans.

Joker director Todd Phillips has rebuffed criticism of his new movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix, as one that glorifies violence in an interview with The Wrap, saying ““what’s outstanding to me in this discourse in this movie is how easily the far left can sound like the far right when it suits their agenda. It’s really been eye opening for me.”

Aidan Turner, star of ‘Poldark’ and The Hobbit, is the latest name to join upcoming Terrence Malick movie The Last Planet. The “life of Christ” movie will star Son of Saul actor Geza Rohrig as Jesus, Matthias Schoenaerts as Peter and Mark Rylance as Satan. Turner will play Andrew.

‘Killing Eve’ star and 2019 Emmy Award winning actress Jodie Comer is in talks to star alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the upcoming Ridley Scott movie The Last Duel.

Upcoming Paul Greengrass directorial project News of the World, based on the novel by Paulette Jiles and set to star Tom Hanks, has been given a 25th December 2020 release date by Universal. The film will follow Hanks’ character, a three-war veteran, as he spreads the news of the day from town to town and meets a remarkable young girl.

David Strathairn, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Good Night, and Good Luck and was a prominent figure in the Bourne franchise, has joined the cast of Guillermo Del Toro’s noir-thriller Nightmare AlleyThe actor joins Bradley Cooper, Toni Collette, Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchette on the cast of the Fox Searchlight project.

Sony are developing a further Spider-Man spin-off, this time based around the comic book character Madame Web. The co-writers behind upcoming Spidey spin-off Morbius (starring Jared Leto), Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, will write the project, with Palek Patel to oversee the project. A director has yet to be revealed.

2019 Emmy Award winning director Jason Bateman is reportedly in talks with Hasbro to direct their upcoming big screen board game adaptation Clue. The movie, which is set to star and be produced by Deadpool Detective Pikachu lead Ryan Reynolds, will be distributed by Disney.

How to Train Your Dragon franchise director Dean DeBlois will make his live-action screenwriting and directorial debut with Hasbro’s Micronauts. The project, currently housed at Paramount, will be the creator’s first job following the completion of his Dragon trilogy.

Rob Cohen, the director of the likes of The Fast and the Furious (2001), xXx (2002) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) has been accused of sexual assault by a woman of the pseudonym Jane in an article published by The Huffington Post. Jane claims that the filmmaker sexually assaulted her in a hotel room in an act that started while she was unconscious. This allegation follows a similar report from the director’s own daughter, Valkyrie Weather, which claims Cohen sexually assaulted her as a child.

Robert Garrison, the actor who played Tommy in Karate Kid (1984), has passed away aged 59. The actor, who was also a part of the Karate Kid sequel Karate Kid: Part II (1986) and the 2019 YouTube return series ‘Cobra Kai’ (2019) is survived by his brother and sister-in-law.

Sid Haig has passed away aged 80. The icon of cult horror cinema and the star of such Rob Zombie hits as House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects was announced to have passed away by his wife Suzie Haig on Monday 23rd September. His career spanned 3 decades and earned the actor over 140 working credits.
