95th Academy Awards – Oscars Nominees 2023

The nominees for the 95th Academy Awards, the 2023 Oscars, have been announced. The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Fabelmans, lead the list of nominated films, each receiving nominations in the Best Director and Best Picture categories.

In a ceremony broadcast to the world via social media and YouTube on Tuesday 24th January 2023, Oscar-winning filmmaker Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) and actress Allison Williams (Get Out, M3GAN) announced more than 100 nominees across 24 categories as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ very best of cinema from 2022.

Over 10,000 industry professionals voted for the best of their respective areas of expertise, with the collective voting for the 10 Best Picture nominees – a list that included box office juggernauts Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water.

Pre-nomination favourites such as Steven Spielberg (Director), Cate Blanchett (Actress In a Leading Role), Brendan Fraser (Actor In a Leading Role) and Fire of Love (Documentary) were all nominated, with the surprises coming in the shape of Judd Hirsch’s nomination in the Actor In a Supporting Role category for little over 6-minutes of screen time in The Fabelmans and Netflix’s The Sea Beast beating Walt Disney Animation’s Strange World to an Animated Feature nomination (an award usually dominated by Disney, this year including Pixar’s Turning Red).

Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave is notable by its absence, the South Korean film being the subject of much pre-announcement discussion for awards beyond the usual International Feature confines of international films, whilst multi-time BAFTA nominee The Woman King was also left off the ballot entirely.

Mandy Walker, the cinematographer on Baz Luhrmann’s much-nominated biopic Elvis, became only the 2nd woman ever nominated for Cinematography at the Oscars. She follows in the footsteps of Rachel Morrison (Mudbound), who was nominated in 2018.

The 2023 Academy Awards will be hosted by popular television host and two-time Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel, live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California at 5pm local time (8pm ET, 1am GMT) on Sunday 12th March 2023.
