10 Best Heathers Moments

5. Kurt and Ram Die

Winona Ryder wielding a gun in the woods.

After Kurt and Ram spread a rumor that Veronica performed oral sex on them in the cow pasture, she is livid and intent on revenge. Her feelings cloud her judgment, allowing J.D. to pull her into his plan to humiliate them. After Veronic lures them into the woods, she has them strip down to their underwear and then shoots at them, believing that the gun she has is filled with blanks. But J.D lied to her and they’re actually real bullets. Veronica is horrified as Ram’s lifeless body lies at her feet, and when J.D. chases Kurt back toward her, she shoots him in a panic, killing him instantly.

This moment is notable because it’s the first time someone dies by Veronica’s hand. Sure, Heather Chandler’s death had been partly her fault, but she didn’t do it on purpose and J.D. had manipulated her into doing it. This time, Veronica’s part in Kurt and Ram’s deaths cannot be denied. It’s a turning point for her character and she begins to realize J.D.’s blood lust might be impossible to contain.

This moment also highlights that Veronica is not just a victim in this situation. Sure, J.D. uses her naïvety against her, but Winona Ryder’s performance suggests that Veronica is just as guilty as he is. Her feelings are messy and angry and she certainly is not your typical girl next door.

4. “Our Love is God, Let’s Go Get a Slushi.”

There are quite a few iconic lines in Heathers. Who could forget gems like, “Fuck me gently with a chainsaw, do I look like Mother Theresa?” and “I love him dead gay son.” Water’s script is littered with phrases that are unique and weird and because they don’t ever reference anything specific to the 80s, there is a timeless quality to the way characters interact with each other. Because its vernacular is specific to the world of the film, Heathers never feels dated.

Perhaps the most iconic line from the film is uttered by J.D. when he happens upon Veronica and Heather McNamara in the cow pasture with Kurt and Ram. After being covered in mud and cow dung, Veronica decides she’d had enough and climbs up toward the road. There, back lit by a blue-black sky, his cigarette smoke wafting in the air, stands J.D. It’s slightly sinister, the way he’s framed, but when he comes into the light, he offers Veronica his hand and says, “Our love is God, let’s go get a slushie.”

This moment, etched into the brains of teenage girls everywhere, is oddly romantic and perfectly showcases why Veronica is so taken with J.D.

3. Heather Chandler’s Funeral

After Heather Chandler is murdered by J.D and Veronica and they stage her death as a suicide, Heather Chandler becomes more popular than ever. Instead of being seen for who she really was, she’s memorialized as a troubled teenager with a heart of gold – a life cut far too short. People parade their grief around like they’re on a television show, making sure to look as sad as possible.

None of it is real, though. Actual people are way more complicated than that. This idea is highlighted at Heather Chandler’s funeral, where all of her classmates take turns kneeling before her open casket. We hear their inner thoughts through voiceover. Some express remorse for her death, while others celebrate it. One student, Peter (Jeremy Applegate), takes the moment to pray to God for a fast acceptance into an Ivy League School. It’s a moment that pulls back the veil on the somewhat performative nature of funerals, allowing the characters to express their complicated emotions about the situation. It’s not respectful by any means, but it is genuine.
