2017 Oscar Nominees Announced

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences broke tradition today – 24th January 2017 – by announcing the nominees to their 2017 awards show, the 89th Annual Academy Awards, live to the world via Facebook Live. The ceremony, set to be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on the 26th of February 2017, looks set to pay tribute to Damien Chazelle’s La La Land after the film earned a joint record 14 nominations, tying the picture with Ben-Hur (1959) and Titanic (1997) in the record books.

Elsewhere in the list of nominees, there were a few surprises, including the almost complete shut out of Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals. The film, which scored 3 Golden Globe nominations including Best Director and Best Picture, scored only one nomination in the Supporting Actor category for Michael Shannon, whose performance wasn’t nominated at all at the Globes despite screen partner Aaron Taylor-Johnson taking home the award at that ceremony. Elle, the Golden Globes’ Best Foreign Language Film winner, was also absent from the list of Foreign Language nominees despite its star Isabelle Huppert being nominated for Best Actress. A major surprise to many was the absence of Amy Adams from the Best Actress category for her performance in Arrival, which scored a joint 2nd highest total of nominations with 8 across other categories. The actress, whose performance had been nominated at almost every awards show in the build-up to the Oscars, was shut out by Isabelle Huppert, Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone and Meryl Streep.

Elsewhere in the list of nominations were spots for the likes of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2), foreign language film A Man Called Ove (2) and the much criticised Suicide Squad (1).
