10 Best Twilight Moments

2. Edward Stops Bella From Changing

I’m gonna make it go away, Bella.”

As Twilight reaches its climax, Edward is faced with a difficult choice…

Bella, who has been bitten by James, is writhing in pain as her body begins to transform into that of a vampire. Edward can either let her turn and suffer immortality, or try to suck the venom out without accidentally killing her in the process. With James being ripped apart and burnt in the background, and the Cullens overwhelmed by the scent of Bella’s blood, there seems to be one thousand things going on.

We are called back to the opening of the movie, where Bella talks about dying in the place of someone she loves. She had come to the ballet studio under the false pretense that her mother was there, being held hostage by James. As a result, there is a real sense that Bella might die.

Our faith in these star-crossed lovers is tested as we wonder whether Edward can resist the compulsion to just keep drinking. As this final fight draws to a close, it is apparent how embedded into Edward’s world Bella has become. She might be saved from becoming a vampire this time around, but she will need to consider her options in the future.

1. Bella Confronts Edward About Being a Vampire

“How long have you been 17?”

This is it. Twilight’s greatest moment. The heart of the film. The moment we’ve been waiting for.

Bella has finally figured it out: Edward is a vampire. The absolute beauty of this scene is that when she figures it out she doesn’t quietly exclaim to herself “he’s a vampire!” – a lesser film would do just that, but not Twilight.

We have to wait until Bella has Edward alone in the woods, until he has coaxed the words out of her mouth, to hear the word “vampire”. Admittedly, the information is spoon-fed to us in the google deep-dive that Bella goes on, but not having her say anything until she confronts Edward about it wonderfully draws out the suspense. This is classified information; Bella isn’t supposed to know and Edward can’t talk about it with her. She has to figure it out on her own and she has to be the one to say it first.

There is so much to learn in this scene. We have it confirmed to us that Edward is a vampire and all of the Edward-shaped puzzle pieces begin to come together. His amazing strength and super speed begin to make sense, and we find out how much of a potential threat he is to Bella. As it all comes together we feel thrust into a new reality – and a much more honest space for our protagonists.

There are no more walls, no more secrets. Endlessly quotable and famously iconic, this Twilight moment is the greatest of them all.
