Zack Snyder Film ‘Rebel Moon’ to Be Released by Netflix

Zack Snyder will return to Netflix for his next film, Rebel Moon, a sci-fi set at the edge of the galaxy that follows a small colony threatened by tyrannical rule.

The long-gestated project was co-written by Snyder and 300 (2006) collaborator Kurt Johnstad (Atomic Blonde – 2017), and has been described by Snyder himself as being inspired by the films of Akira Kurosawa and the original Star Wars trilogy.

It was Snyder’s collaboration with Johnstad on 300 that thrust the director into the spotlight, the now well-known filmmaker establishing himself at the forefront of the burgeoning comic book movie era and earning himself a reputation as a recognisable craftsman who would reliably deliver a film under budget. Following a number of unique mid-to-high budget projects at Warner Bros, the filmmaker was effectively handed the studio’s comic book division and tasked with captaining their DC-branded answer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throughout the 2010s, Snyder would establish a creative direction for the new franchise, directing Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman (2016) before personal tragedy forced him to step away from the project in 2017 during filming for Justice League. In 2021, his vision for the third of his instalments was finally completed, Warner Bros releasing Zack Snyder’s Justice League via their streaming service HBO Max.

News of Rebel Moon heading to Netflix seems to put an emphatic end to speculation that the director will return to Warner Bros’ DC Extended Universe (DCEU), dampening the spirits of those who vocally supported #restorethesnyderverse throughout the spring of 2021, but will make it three streaming releases in a row for a filmmaker largely praised for his “big screen visuals”, Rebel Moon following back-to-back streaming successes Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Army of the Dead.

According to Deadline, Wesley Coller and Deborah Snyder will act as co-producers to Zack Snyder on behalf of The Stone Quarry, whilst Grand Electric will be represented by producer Eric Newman on this new project expected to commence filming in 2022.
