10 Best The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Moments

5. Mithril Vest

Frodo (Elijah Wood) has every dark creature snapping at his heels. It’s early on and he has already been attacked so many times.

During a battle with orcs and a cave troll, Sting, Bilbo’s elvish blade that burns blue when orcs are near, has already made an appearance. When Frodo is lunged at with a spear it looks like the quest might be over before it has even begun. But of course, hobbits are tricksy, and he reveals a Mithril vest.

This acts as a little easter egg for fans of “The Hobbit”, as readers will know that Bilbo was gifted that vest from the one and only Thorin Oakenshield.

4. If You Want Him, Come and Claim Him

There are not a lot of women in The Lord of the Rings, and even fewer with speaking parts. Of the three (yes, three) deemed main cast, two of them spend a lot of their time fawning over Aragorn – understandably so, we are all right there with them.

So, it’s an impactful moment when Arwen (Liv Tyler) puts her foot down and demands she’s the one to rescue an injured (you guessed it) Frodo. She outrides the Ringwraiths and uses magic to summon the water needed to waylay them. She is defiant and every bit the elven queen.

3. Gimli Tries to Break the Ring

Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) is a dwarf of action and (in a scene not adapted from the book) this moment proves just as much.

Lord Elrond (Hugo Weaving) places the ring in the centre of the potential Fellowship and without thinking Gimli crashes his axe down on the tiny gold band. Of course, the axe is splintered and Gimli is sent flying backwards. In an instant, we know of Gimli’s temperament and his dedication to destroying the ring of power.
