From intricate design details to the way they reflect a hero’s journey, the best of these suits have become iconic symbols.

There are hundreds of superhero suits that have made the jump from the pages of comic books to the silver screen, and while some may leave a lot to be desired, many of them are truly spectacular. In this Movie List, we at The Film Magazine have whittled them all down to the 10 Best Live-Action Superhero Suits that not only dazzled on the screen but also left a lasting impact on fans and wider popular culture. These are the costumes that defined heroes, elevated their stories and set the standard for what a superhero might look like in the real world. To prevent the list being primarily made up of Bat and Spider-themed heroes, we have decided to limit the choices to one suit per character.

Honourable Mention – X-Men Suits at the End of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

Despite the trainwreck that was X-Men: Apocalypse, we were gifted a pretty accurate adaptation of the mutants’ classic comic book suits – for all of 5 seconds.

Sneaking this peak ended the film on a high note, offering the promise that the next instalment would finally embrace the colourful majesty of the comics and give the X-Men their long overdue suits – but that was an empty promise. By the time the next X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, was released in 2019, these suits had been long forgotten.

For a brief moment, X-Men fans had it all. But that dream was taken too soon.

10. Blue Beetle – Blue Beetle (2023)

Side-by-side of DC comic book Blue Beetle and the 2023 film version.

Blue Beetle was a box office flop, accumulating $131million at the box office, the lowest in the DC Extended Universe, and much less than its production and promotion budget of an estimated $190million. But one thing the filmmakers absolutely nailed is the near one-to-one recreation of the Blue Beetle suit from the comics.

In-universe, the costume is derived from the alien scarab (Khaji Da), which bonds with Jaime Reyes and encases him in a high-tech exoskeleton. Costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo pulled this off effortlessly. The suit has a sleek, biomechanical appearance. It appears almost organic, with parts of the suit looking like they’ve grown onto Jaime’s body rather than being simply worn.

The suit perfectly captures Cully Hamner’s original 2006 design for the character. The blue is bright and almost luminescent, giving it an otherworldly glow. The black sections, particularly around the joints and abdomen, provide contrast and highlight the suit’s segmented, insect-like design. The light up parts of the suit also allow it to stand out in darker scenes. The transformation scene, where the scarab attaches itself to Jaime’s body and the suit is first introduced, is glorious body horror – making for one hell of an introduction.

9. Black Panther – Black Panther (2018)

Black Panther Review

Making its initial appearance in Captain America: Civil War, the Black Panther suit instantly caught the attention of the public. It was noticeably different from the other suits in the MCU, which often looked like they had been crafted by the same tailor. Instead, the Black Panther suit was unorthodox and took heavy inspiration from African culture.

The suit is further improved in Black Panther’s own film, becoming more streamlined and gaining some new abilities. Now the suit is able to store and release kinetic energy. As T’Challa takes hits during combat, the suit absorbs the energy from these impacts and dispels this as powerful shockwaves.

The suit is predominantly black, which enhances its stealth capabilities and gives it a sleek, intimidating look – truly embracing the panther motif. The texture of the suit is inspired by African textiles and traditional patterns, subtly woven into the material to reflect Wakanda’s cultural roots. The suit is, therefore, a fusion of ancient traditions with futuristic technology, mirroring Wakanda’s unique position in the world as a hidden yet technologically superior nation.

Ruth E. Carter was rewarded for her work on this suit, and the rest of the Wakandan wardrobe, winning the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 2019.
