8. The Cupcake
While this scene doesn’t really add much to the plot, it is a beautifully choreographed piece.
Annie bakes a single cupcake and decorates it immaculately before cramming it into her face, her mouth downturned and her eyes dull.
The tiny details show that Annie is extremely talented – while we know her to be a mess, this makes it clear there was a time when she wasn’t. And the bakery’s closure most likely wasn’t her fault.
If only there was an adorable Irish cop who could help her to re-find her passion…
7. The JuJu Dress
Lillian tries on the dress that Helen has arranged with a famous designer and she looks absolutely ridiculous. This is a well-worn path for a wedding comedy and there isn’t much new that even titans such as Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig can add to it, but what makes this scene so important is that it is finally when Lillian sees things from Annie’s perspective and acknowledges what a nightmare she has been.
It’s a nice wrapping up moment between the two best friends and it helps us to know that everything is going to be okay.

6. Megan and Her Air Marshal
Megan (Melissa McCarthy) fulfils a well-known trope for ensemble romantic comedies – she is the equivalent of American Pie’s Paul Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Road Trip’s Kyle Edwards (DJ Qualls), and The Hangover’s Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis). She is the weirdo of the group, the one whose boundaries are way off, the character to whom social cues mean nothing.
She is confident and romantically successful even while dressed in a golfing shirt and a Kangol hat. Her wooing of the air marshal (real-life husband Ben Falcone) is a welcome break from the wedding and internal politics of the group. She’s walking to the beat of her own drum, and she likes it. And so does he…
