9 years after the surprise zombie-fighting critical smash Zombieland hit cinemas, Sony Pictures are to reunite the original cast and crew for a sequel titled Zombieland 2 that is set for release on the original movie’s 10th anniversary in October 2019.

Zombieland lead Jesse Eisenberg will return to his role as one of three central cast members to have been nominated for an acting award at the Oscars (for The Social Network – 2011) in the years since the film’s release, with Emma Stone (La La Land – 2017) and Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – 2018). Abigail Breslin, herself nominated for an acting award before her appearance in Zombieland (for Little Miss Sunshine – 2007), will also be returning.

Zombieland (2009)

The original movie’s director Ruben Fleischer will return to the director’s chair after proving himself to Sony on their soon to be released Spider-Man universe movie Venom. In the years since Zombieland, Fleischer has directed 30 Minutes or Less (2011), Gangster Squad (2013) and a slew of TV episodes including 2 episodes of Netflix hit comedy ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ in 2017.

Original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will also be returning to write the screenplay for the long-anticipated sequel having worked on the likes of the Deadpool movies in recent years, with producer Gavin Polone also set to return.

Zombieland became somewhat of a cult classic after earning $100million worldwide from a $24million budget and building on that success in the home markets. The sequel will see the same collection of characters given greater odds to overcome as they battle evolved zombies at the White House as well as their growing irritation towards one another.
