10 Best Dr Alan Grant Jurassic Park Moments

8. The Talking Velociraptor

Sam Neill blows into the skull of a deceased Velociraptor whilst playing Dr Alan Grant in 'Jurassic Park III'.

Jurassic Park III

Alan and the Kirbys huddle in the middle of an irate Velociraptor pack. It’s hard to see how they’ll get out alive. But once Amanda (Téa Leoni) hands back the stolen eggs to the furious mother, Alan has his Dr Doolittle moment.

Jurassic Park isn’t real science, but it spent a long time creating a world where it could be. And if you lean in, it seems completely plausible that Dr Grant, a lifelong raptor lover, could mimic the cries of his favourite dinosaur. It’s a nice callback to the first film where he speaks brachiosaurus through his hands in the treetops. Obviously, the technology has moved on a little by 2001.

7. He Jumps Out of the Car

Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill in 1993 blockbuster feature film 'Jurassic Park'.

Jurassic Park

Chaos is a thread woven throughout Jurassic Park, and while at first it is suggested that nature is the overriding chaotic force (the storm, the animals) it is of course the humans whose actions cause the most ripples. Their naivety, splicing the wrong DNA, Nedry’s greed… it goes on.

Dr Alan Grant is a calm and steady presence amongst the carnage, but even he falls victim to the lure of chaos. Him stepping out of the car (during Malcolm’s speech about chaos theory just to ensure viewers definitely pick up on the metaphor) is the first moment that the theme park’s weak spots are starting to show. If the steadiest character can do something unpredictable then imagine what a couple of angry Dilophosaurus could get up to.

6. Taking On the Velociraptor

Sam Neill, Isabella Surman and Chris Pratt confront a Velociraptor in 'Jurassic World Dominion' (2022).

Jurassic Park Dominion

There are lots of nods to the original Jurassic Park in Jurassic World Dominion – Grant and Owen (Chris Pratt) facing a T-Rex and saying “nobody move” at the same moment, with an exasperated little eye roll from Dr Grant being a particular highlight. Grant is used to being the one who sorts things out, but Owen is obviously the more likely action hero.

When Owen charges Alan and Maisie (Isabella Sermon) with wrangling a baby Velociraptor, Grant slyly picks up a wrench to protect himself, clearly not trusting Owen yet. It doesn’t take long though, Sam Neill’s face as Owen orders “Grant, we’re triangulating” is perfect, and he immediately puts his hands up in true Owen Grady fashion. He’s handing over the torch.
