Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin is looking for Will Smith to play the Genie.
Smith had originally been linked with a major role in Tim Burton’s live-action Dumbo adaptation but was unable to agree terms due to scheduling conflicts with Bad Boys III. But, with the third Bad Boys movie temporarily shelved due to the recent departure of the film’s would-be director, Smith has more flexibility than before and is reportedly Guy Ritchie’s first choice to play the iconic classic Disney character.
The live-action Aladdin is being described by producer Dan Lin as a ‘non-traditional’ retelling of the story and thus opens up room for Smith to offer the character a different identity to that which Robin Williams famously gifted the character in the original animated movie (1992).
If the deal is made, Smith will become the movie’s first high-profile casting choice, though his high salary demands mean that such a deal is still far from being agreed.
