Frozen II Debuts – UK Box Office Roundup 22-24th Nov 2019

It’s a chilly end to November as Frozen II tops the charts!

This past weekend (22nd-24th Nov) saw the release of the highly anticipated Walt Disney studios animation Frozen II, instantly breaking box office records by becoming the highest grossing animated film within its opening weekend on record.

Written and directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck (the powerhouse team behind Frozen), Frozen II takes audiences back to the nordic wonderland of Arendelle. In the next chapter we find Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven and Olaf as they embark on a new adventure to an autumnal enchanted forest.

Taking a whopping £15mil at the UK box office, Frozen II tops the chart this weekend. Keeping Walt Disney Pictures well and truly at the top of the game for 2019, the much anticipated sequel is the third-highest three day opening of 2019 sitting just behind fellow Disney releases The Lion King and the current leader of all box office records, Avengers: Endgame.

While Joker may have slipped down from the top spot over the last couple of weeks, it has celebrated a huge achievement in becoming the latest member of the $1 billion club. This makes it the newest title on the top 50 highest grossing films of all time list, now sitting quite comfortably at number 36 with its global box office takings of $1,036,857,842.

It’s safe to say that Disney are completely dominating the box office this year and that their reign is likely to last for the foreseeable future with Frozen II having just been released and breaking records already, and with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hitting the big screen in less than 4 weeks. After the success of The Force Awakens (2015) opening with $247.9 million and The Last Jedi (2017) opening with $220 million, The Rise of Skywalker is likely to be another huge hit for Lucasfilm and Disney.

But, will Frozen II hold the top spot next weekend as we see these big budget releases hitting the silver screen in the upcoming week?

Knives Out (Lionsgate) opens across the country on November 27th. Rian Johnson’s modern take on the traditional ‘who dunnit?’ hits cinemas this week with its stellar cast. Join Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Toni Colette and Katherine Langford as they team up with Daniel Craig to uncover the untimely murder of Christopher Plummer in this nail biting murder mystery. Earlier in the year Knives Out was released to press and preview screenings at the BFI London Film Festival to rave reviews, undoubtedly setting it up for box-office success this coming weekend.

Charlie’s Angels (Columbia Pictures) hits the big screens on Friday 29th. Elizabeth Banks directs this new modern take on the classic Charlie’s Angels team as they are called in to save the day, putting their lives in danger for the greater good. Starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska.

Also coming to the cinemas on the 29th is Kevin Smith’s long awaited Jay and Silent Bob reboot, appropriately titled Jay & Silent Bob Reboot (Destro Films). Jay and Bob are back as the comical pair travel to Hollywood to stop the reboot of their favourite film being made, oh the irony.

If big budget reboots aren’t for you, The Biggest Little Farm (Diamond Docs) will be showing at select cinemas up and down the country this coming weekend. In this groundbreaking documentary feature we follow John and Molly Chester as they embark on the challenge to develop a completely sustainable farm on 200 acres of land in Southern California, discovering that tackling the Californian bush fires is only the start of their battle. Directed by John Chester himself and having received outstanding reviews on the festival circuit, this will be the documentary to watch this season.
