UK Box Office Report September 8th-10th 2017

The official numbers are in for the takings of this week’s big releases at the UK Box Office, and after weeks of sub-standard ticket sales that resulted in only one film passing the £1million mark at any point in the past two weeks, ‘IT’ has made its debut, setting records globally and reviving the local box office.

‘IT’ made £10,002,443 this weekend alone; more than all of the other films at the UK Box Office combined. The movie, which has set records in North America for being the highest grossing horror release of all time as well as the highest grossing opening weekend in September’s history, seems to have struck a chord with audiences worldwide, taking a place in cultural iconography and becoming a must-see early-autumn movie. Here are the top 5 films:

Also making its debut this weekend was Wind River which, despite having little competition for a spot in the top 5 – with number 5’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard reaching only £484,936 – could only make number 6 on the list despite the star power of Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen as well as growing traction in the North American market.

At the bottom of this week’s top 15 are Cars 3 (13), Captain Underpants (14) and God’s Own Country (15), with the latter of the three – a British film made in Yorkshire – making only £133,636 this weekend, equating to a £405,930 taking in its opening 2 weeks, all but ensuring that the £1million film will be a financial failure.

Interestingly, Despicable Me 3 is still hanging onto a spot in the top 10 having made £380,436 in what was its 11th weekend in cinemas. This is quite a remarkable feat that has pushed the movie to £46,207,012 in the territory over the course of its run, with there seemingly being a few weeks left in the movie yet.

Perhaps just as astonishingly, Dunkirk remains in the top 3 for the 8th week running, earning £629,435 this weekend to take its total to an unforeseen £55,046,949 – a total that has made it the number 2 film of the year thus far.
