A new Star Wars spin-off centring on Obi-Wan Kenobi, a central character to the universe’s prequel trilogy and the franchise’s debut A New Hope, is in the works at Lucasfilm, The Hollywood Reporter have revealed.
The new movie is in its earliest stages of development with a story yet to be developed, a script written or an actor cast. It is being reported however, that three-time Oscar nominated British director Stephen Daldry is currently negotiating a deal that would see him take the reins of the film primarily as director but also with a say on story direction, casting and so on.
Nominated for Billy Elliot (2001), The Hours (2003) and The Reader (2009), Daldry has made a seamless transition from theatre to film, though a Star Wars universe movie would mark a distinct change in direction for the filmmaker as he is usually best associated with the drama genre.
Reports are developing following the reveal. We’ll have more information if and when it’s released.
