A Men In Black spin-off is being fast-tracked at Sony Pictures, with an untitled film written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Iron Man – 2008; Transformers: The Last Knight – 2017) set for release on May 17th 2019.
The movie will not star original duo Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, but will be set within the same universe and will make various references to the original trilogy with the aim of expanding the East Coast based story to a more global setting.
Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing the picture, with Steven Spielberg set to act as executive producer on the project. A director is thought to be the trio’s highest priority in the coming weeks.
It had previously been expected that the next Men In Black instalment would be a crossover with the studio’s 21 Jump Street franchise. The movie, which would feature Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill graduating Jump Street for the Men in Black, is still expected to happen, though there has yet to be anything set in stone. The revelation that this yet-to-be-titled Men In Black spin-off will come as early as 2019 all but confirms that this film will be released before the Jump Street spin-off.
Walter F. Parkes had the following to say regarding the new project:
“It’s so rare to get to the end of the script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spin-off that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place.”
