J.J. Abrams has added more names to his extended cast for the final episode in the current trilogy of Star Wars movies by casting ‘The Crown’ star Matt Smith and Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan.

German born British actor Dominic Monaghan is best known for starring as one of the central Hobbits in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings series, Merry, and previously worked with Abrams as a central figure in his powerhouse TV series ‘Lost’. He had previously contacted Abrams to enquire about joining the cast of The Force Awakens (2015) but was told that wasn’t possible as Episode VII would feature relative unknowns akin to the original Star Wars (1977). His role in the upcoming movie was revealed over the weekend, though details regarding his role are being kept a secret.

Matt Smith, who starred as iconic British character Doctor Who in the TV series of the same name between 2010 and 2013, is also set to fill a role that has yet to be revealed, though it is expected that he will feature more prominently than other recent additions to the cast.

As well as the cast of Episode VIII, Abrams has already cast Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell and Billy Dee Williams for his series finale.

The yet-to-be-titled Star Wars – Episode IX is due for worldwide release on 20th Dec 2019.
