Letterman, whose feature-length career started with Shark Tale in 2004, will present the action written by Guardians of the Galaxy scribe Nicole Perlman and her writing partner Alex Hirsch (the screenwriter of television’s Gravity Falls).

The movie will focus on a new character named Detective Pikachu, a talking version of Ash’s beloved partner from the original TV series, who will investigate a number of happenings inside a yet-to-be-announced region of the Pokemon universe.

Legendary, who bought the rights to make a live-action Pokemon movie earlier this year, will look to begin filming as early as January 2017, with Universal ready to distribute the film to Western audiences.

Director Rob Letterman’s feature-length directorial career also includes: Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) and Gulliver’s Travels (2010).
