Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has boarded Luca Guadagnino’s follow up to his 2018 Oscars front-runner Call Me By Your Name as a producer and star in the picture set to be titled Burial Rites.
Based on true events, Burial Rites will tell the tale of Agnes Magnusdottir (Lawrence), the last woman to be publicly executed in Iceland in 1830, and will work from Hannah Kent’s 2013 novel of the same name.
TriStar Pictures are currently in charge of the project, with Hannah Minghella and Shary Shirazi overseeing the film for the studio, Gary Ross and Jerry Kalajian acting as executive producers and Lawrence, Justine Ciarrocchi and Allison Shearmur acting as producers.
Shearmur released the following statement regarding the film:
“Luca Guadagnino is a masterful storyteller who brilliantly captures the nuance of the human condition in his films. I cannot wait for him to bring his original voice to the raw, visceral brutality, and poetry of Hannah Kent’s haunting true story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the last woman to be publicly executed in Iceland for the murder of two men. Jennifer Lawrence, Justine Ciarrocchi, and I love this project and we could not be more excited by the way it is coming together with Hannah Minghella’s passion and drive to get it done at TriStar.”
