The Invisible Man Is Surprise Front Runner – UK Box Office Report 2nd March 2020

We have seen quite a change in the UK box office this week as the latest suspense-horror takes the lead after last week’s chart-topping family friendly adventures fall behind.

The Invisible Man is the new highest earner at the UK box office with an impressive £2.1 million take from its opening weekend, an unlikely success from the horror film starring ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ star Elisabeth Moss. It had a domestic opening of a whopping $28.2 million and, thanks in part to its success in the UK, has earned itself $48.3 million worldwide in just 3 days – all from a relatively tiny budget of $9million.

Biographical drama Dark Waters, starring Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway, is the other major newcomer to the UK box office top ten this week, earning itself 4th place after an opening weekend of £860,942, adding to its worldwide total of $14.1 million. Films of a similar nature, such as Bombshell (worldwide total $56 million) and Richard Jewell (worldwide total $41.8 million), have earned huge sums in comparison to this post-Oscars drama, though their longevity on the chart could indicate a greater deal of success for Dark Waters as the weeks pass.

Despite holding its own last week, Disney’s Call of the Wild has had a disappointing continued run. After reportedly losing approximately $50 million worldwide, it has dropped from 4th place in the chart to 8th place this weekend after a poor midweek. Dropping approximately 67% from weekend to weekend, it seems like this Harrison Ford adventure movie won’t be sticking around for long.

After taking another £1.04 million this weekend, Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning thriller Parasite is not far behind Guy Ritchie’s comedy The Gentlemen, with its overall takings rising to £10.3 million – an all-time record for a film not in the English language. Will it do enough to knock The Gentlemen off the top 5 by next weekend? With takings of £2million in the past 7 days, it’s certainly possible.

Coming this week we see a selection of great films making their way to the UK box office.

Sony’s new fantasy-adventure Fantasy Island hits cinemas this Friday (March 6th) and stars Michael Peña (Ant-Man), Lucy Hale (‘Pretty Little Liars’) and Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), as they find themselves on a magical island where things are not as they seem. A remake of the popular 70s TV show, Fantasy Island is predicted to do well at the box office this weekend.

Disney/Pixar are back with their latest animated adventure Onward, a story of bravery, family values and savage unicorns. Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) lead the star-studded voice cast in the latest voyage from the animation giants. Likely to be a hit for all ages, Onward will be in cinemas this Friday.

Based on the true story of the choir formed by the wives of service men serving in Afghanistan, Military Wives is likely to pull on the heart strings of anyone who can relate to their story. Starring Kristen Scott Thomas (Darkest Hour) and Sharon Horgan (Game Night), Military Wives is an incredibly British film and therefore likely to be popular with British audiences. Take your tissues to the cinema from March 6th.

Other releases this weekend include:

Romantic drama starring LaKeith Stanfield, The Photograph. Escape from Pretoria, a thrilling drama starring Daniel Radcliffe based on the real-life prison break. And Sulpher and White, a drama starring Anna Friel and Mark Stanley. See them all at select cinemas up and down the country from this Friday.
