Cannes 2019 Award Winners Full List

Over the course of the 11 day Cannes International Film Festival, filmmakers as wide ranging as Quentin Tarantino and Xavier Dolan, Jessica Hausner and Terrence Malick, debuted their films to a vast audience of filmmakers and film journalists in the Mediterranean region of south eastern France, with the very best of those in competition winning the highly coveted awards handed out at today’s (25th May 2019) awards ceremony.

Chosen and presented by a jury of highly respected filmmakers including The Revenant director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Cold War director Pawel Pawlikowski, The Favourite director Yorgos Lanthimos, Elle Fanning and Alice Rohrwacher, the prize for the festival’s most coveted award, the Palme d’Or, went to South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho for his work on new film Parasite.

The awarding of the Okja and Snowpiercer director with the jury’s highest prize marks the second year in a row that an asian filmmaker has won the award after Hirokazu Kore-eda won in 2018 for his work on Shoplifters.

Another major talking point of the ceremony was the history-making Grand Prix award win for Mati Diop. The French-Senegalese filmmaker behind Atlantics became the first black female director to ever win the award in the festival’s 72 year history.

Elsewhere, the award for Best Director at the festival went to the Dardennes (Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne) for their achievements with Le jeune Ahmed (Young Ahmed), while British actor Emily Beecham won Best Actress for her work on Little Joe.

Camera d’Or – Our Mothers (César Díaz)

Short Film Palme d’Or – The Distance Between Us and the Sky (Vasilis Kekatos)

Queer Palm (Feature) – Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Celine Sciamma)
