Ryan Coogler To Helm ‘Black Panther 2’

Ryan Coogler is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as screenwriter-director for the hotly anticipated follow up to Black Panther, currently titled Black Panther 2.

The screenwriter, director and producer will return to the Kingdom of Wakanda as early as next year, beginning work on the hotly anticipated follow up to the breakout superhero hit and cultural phenomenon that Black Panther became earlier in 2018.

The sequel, which will follow on from the first Black Panther film that Coogler also directed and co-wrote, is not expected to be released until at least 2020, with a Spring 2021 release being the most likely date.

The Hollywood Reporter has moved to confirm that the deal was struck between Coogler and Disney/Marvel a while ago, but that things had been kept under wraps. Notably, Coogler didn’t sign a multi-release deal ahead of the first film and resisted signing on for a sequel despite the picture earning $1.3billion worldwide.

Currently, the only films left on Marvel’s slate are Captain Marvel (8th March 2019), Avengers 4 (May 2019) and an untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel (July 2019).

Coogler is currently attached as screenwriter and producer for the sequel to his Rocky spin-off Creed, Creed II (due for release November 2018), and will act as producer on a sequel to Space Jam which is currently in development.
