10 Best Singin’ in the Rain Moments

2. Don’s Rise to Fame

While being interviewed on the red carpet, Don Lockwood tells a story of a dignified career. What we see is the truth behind Don’s meteoric rise from dance hall fiddler to stunt man to leading man. With Cosmo by his side… naturally.

This is an extremely elegant way of fitting in a large amount of exposition. It sets the tone for the rest of the film beautifully. As well as showing the dance prowess of the two leading men, “Fit as a Fiddle” in particular shows the grace with which both Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor can move their bodies, even when humorously.

The interview is both a great introduction to Don and Cosmo as characters, and is also clever foreshadowing of some of the film’s more prominent themes. Those being: illusion verses reality, fame, resilience, and friendship.

1. Singin’ in the Rain

Don and Kathy have finally admitted their feelings to each other, and Don is beyond elated. As the weather turns foul, his emotions get the better of him. What else is there to do but sing and dance?

Gene Kelly’s dance among the puddles is one of the most famous in cinema history. The song has been sampled and used in car adverts, while homages to the dance have been made by so many, including Ross Gellar, Morecambe and Wise, and more sinisterly by Malcolm McDowell’s Alex in A Clockwork Orange. The fact that Kelly was reportedly dancing with a fever makes the whole thing even more impressive.

In a film that goes for the joke at every opportunity, this is an important flash of sincerity for its protagonist. He is a man so in love, so purely in touch with his feelings, and it becomes something so culturally important, instantly recognisable, and utterly glorious.

It is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
