10 Best The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers Moments

2. The Rohirrim Arrive

The men at Helm’s Deep have been run ragged. King Théoden has led the retreat back into the fortress. But Aragorn has convinced him, with a rousing speech, that they have one more fight left in them. Dawn’s early light gleams through a window, and it’s the fifth day…

When it looks like all is lost, Gandalf keeps his promise, arriving with the full Rohirrim at his side. The riders of Rohan, absolutely thrilled to no longer be in exile, are ready to defend their king once more.

They charge towards the orcs, spilling down a practically vertical hill and evading the thousands of six-foot long spears pointed at them.

It’s unbelievable. It’s ridiculous. It’s amazing.

Rohan!

1. Gollum’s Conversation

While battles rage, The Two Towers story arc for Sam and Frodo is more sedate. It’s perilous, but in a slower, more plodding way. They approach Mordor on foot, led by Gollum, or Sméagol as he has now become. The compassion Frodo has shown really does seem to have changed him. While it is easily argued that Sam is the true hero of the trilogy, his main fault (besides insisting on calling his best pal Sir) is his utter distrust in Sméagol.

Sam’s unkindness leads Gollum to emerge in Sméagol’s psyche once more. The conversation the creature has with himself is a huge turning point and will impact on Sam and Frodo’s journey exponentially. It is a visual delight, and it’s as funny as it is troubling.
