10 Best Get Out Moments

2. Armchair Fluff

Chris has been captured, secured to an armchair and left with a strange 80s home video to explain the diabolical plan. His nervous tick of scratching kicks in. He’s terrified. But even in this moment of sheer panic he is smart. He knows he cannot hear the clink of a tea spoon on porcelain again. He knows his life depends on it.

When we realise what he has done, it’s a real ‘oh yeah’ moment.

1. Hypnosis

Before we ever really know what’s happening and Rose’s mum, Missy (Catherine Keener), is still a friendly therapist, she offers to talk to Chris in an attempt to get to know the man who might be joining their family. She delves deep into his traumatic past, ignoring his obvious discomfort. Then boom, a stern “sink” leaves us reeling.

She hypnotises Chris without his consent, under the pretence that she doesn’t want him smoking cigarettes around her precious Rose.

This is a beautifully choreographed scene with lots of foreshadowing and incredible acting. We are introduced to the sunken place, a truly terrifying notion. It’s the first indication that this film is dipping its toes into the realm of science fiction as well as horror, that Get Out has layers far beyond any initial expectations.
