The Josh Trank directed and 20th Century Fox financed reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise has flopped at the box office.
The movie starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell, failed to topple Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation from the top spot, grossing a total of $26.2million from 3,995 screens in North America – an entire $30million less than Fantastic Four (2005) and $32million less than Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) managed in their opening weekends. The figure, which is way below expectations, is compounded by an only slightly improved foreign market gross of $34.1million, making the worldwide opening weekend gross for the movie $60.3Million, only one half of the production’s $120million budget.
Last week Josh Trank fought bad reviews of his film, that see it ranked at only 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a tweet blaming the poor quality of the finished project on the studio who had a ‘different vision’, something Fox executives have been quick to deny.
While it’s not uncommon for a movie to make up its losses after the opening weekend, it seems very unlikely that the movie will make any significant money, and that there won’t be a sequel.
